Phones in 2020: More killer cameras, 5G and foldable screens are coming
Get ready for phones to try to wow you again this year. Here are the most important features to expect.
Last year at this time, phone watchers everywhere bemoaned the state of phones. Sales were stagnant, devices felt same-same, and while we knew change was in the air, nobody was sure if thewould go to plan. Now in the first days of 2020, devices like the rumored and have the chance to deliver on some of last year’s dramatic promises.
2019 brought us the historic Samsung Galaxy Fold, and . We also saw less flashy, but equally important themes of longer-lasting and , operating systems added new bells and whistles (dark mode!) and digital assistants got smarter. Phone cameras embraced new sensors and enhanced image capture, from seriously to .
Looking forward, we’ll see these features beefed up and gain new tricks — cameras with oodles of megapixels, phones with outrageously large batteries and screens that give you smoother graphics. We’ll see more 5G in more phones. We’ll also get some clarity over the role of foldable phones, if they have one at all beyond this fascinating period of experimentation.
Here are the most important things you have to look forward to with this year’s phones.
Upcoming phone launches in 2019 and 2020 – these are the phones worth seeing before you upgrade.
If you’re due a phone upgrade you might want to hold off just a little longer – there are some great new phones coming from the likes of Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, Apple, OnePlus, Sony, Nokia and LG (but probably not HTC) in the next 12 months, and we’d hate for you to get tied into a two-year contract and immediately regret it.
Two of the hot new trends are 5G connectivity and foldable designs. Neither is something you really need to worry about right now, with 5G still exclusive to only two of the four major UK operators and not expected to become widespread until much later in 2020, and foldable phones still few and far between and, for most people, priced out of reach. That said, if you intend to hang on to your new phone for a few years yet some element of future-proofing is worth considering.
Today’s best phones blend ultimate performance with long battery life, high-resolution full-display screens, excellent photography capabilities (from a triple- or even quad-lens assembly) and decent sound quality.
Right now the processor of choice is the Snapdragon 855 or 855 Plus, with the Snapdragon 865 due in Q1 2020. Apple, Huawei and Samsung will continue to develop their own alternatives, but with similar levels of performance.
Top smartphones coming in 2019 & 2020
We’ve listed the flagships expected to arrive in 2019 and 2020 from the world’s biggest smartphone makers. Though launch dates are yet to be confirmed for some of these phones we’ve attempted to keep things roughly in date order, so you have a good idea of how long you’ll be waiting to upgrade.
The Best Phones for 2020
We test and rate hundreds of mobile phones each year. Whether you’re looking for Apple, Android, or even a simple feature phone, these are our top picks for a variety of budgets across the major US wireless carriers.
Dial Up the Perfect Phone
For most of us, mobile phones are at the center of our universe. The typical feature set of these palm-size marvels is astounding. It’s your phone, your messaging device, your web browser, your camera, your music player, your GPS, and more.
We’re a smartphone-dominated nation, with 4G LTE networks beating many home internet connections in terms of speed, and 5G just beginning to launch in select cities. We have more good wireless carrier options than we’ve had in years, thanks to vigorous competition between the four major carriers and smaller virtual carriers like Google Fi and Visible. But some of our choices have constricted a bit: The smartphone OS marketplace is basically down to Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, and it’s hard to find a really good simple voice phone nowadays.
Here at PCMag, we review almost every smartphone released on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, and many of their sub-brands such as Boost, Cricket, and Metro.
Best phones for 2020: The best smartphones you can buy
These are the best phones, tested and ranked
With so many smartphones vying for your attention, it’s not easy to pick the best phone. Tom’s Guide reviews dozens of new handsets each year, and we evaluate them in our labs and in the real world based on design, features, performance, camera quality and battery life.
We also perform in-depth face-offs between flagship phones to decide on our best phone rankings. But not everyone has the budget for a flagship, which is why we also provide recommendations for cheaper phones. That includes the brand new Galaxy Note 10 Lite and Galaxy S10 Lite that just debuted at CES 2020, each with powerful CPUs and huge batteries for what should be an attainable price.
One of the bigger phone trends for 2020 is 5G phones. 5G networks are starting to become more robust — with Verizon and T-Mobile being the most aggressive thus far, but current 5G phones don’t yet support all the bands needed for a future-proof experience.
Another big trend? That would be foldable phones, even though the Galaxy Fold didn’t turn out to be the watershed moment Samsung was hoping for. But more foldable phones are on the way, including the Motorola Razr (which has been slightly delayed) with a pocket-friendly clamshell design and the Galaxy Fold 2.
Our best phone list has something for everyone, whether you prefer Android or iOS, a big-screen phone or small phone or you want to save some money by going with an older phone.
